France Schengen visa cover letter: sample and tips
France receives more Schengen visa applications than any other country. Most applicants fill in the form online on France-Visas first, then hand in their documents at a visa centre.
Where and how to apply
- Online form first. You fill in the application on the official France-Visas website, print it, and bring it to your appointment.
- Then the visa centre. Your documents and fingerprints are taken at the visa centre France uses in your country (often TLScontact or VFS Global). France-Visas tells you which one.
- Main destination rule. Apply to France if you spend the most nights there. If the nights are equal, apply to the first Schengen country you enter.
What your letter should say
The consulate checks four things: why you travel, where you stay, how you pay, and why you will return. A one-page letter covers each of them in a sentence or two, then lists the documents you enclose. The full cover letter guide explains each part.

A sample for a tourist trip. Replace every detail with your own, and keep the dates identical to your bookings.
Good to know for France
- France-Visas has a checklist assistant that lists the documents for your exact situation. Use it before you write your letter, so the letter mentions the same documents.
- Travel medical insurance must cover at least 30,000 euros and the whole Schengen area for every day of your stay.
- Name the cities. "Paris and Lyon, then two days in Annecy" reads better than "tourism in France".
If you stay with family or friends
If you stay with family or friends in France, your host usually needs an official attestation d'accueil from their town hall. A personal invitation letter is helpful, but it does not replace it. You can prepare the personal letter with the invitation letter guide.
Questions people ask
Do I need a cover letter for a France Schengen visa?
France-Visas lists the documents for each situation. Many applicants add a short cover letter even when it is not listed, because it helps the officer understand the trip quickly. Check the checklist France-Visas gives you.
Who do I address the letter to?
To the Visa Section of the French embassy or consulate that covers where you live, for example "Consulate General of France in Chennai".
