Schengen visa cover letter for self-employed applicants
Without an employer's leave letter, the consulate looks at your business to see why you will come back. Your cover letter is where you explain it in two or three clear sentences.
What to say in your letter
- What you do: "I run a graphic design studio, Kavya Designs, which I founded in 2019." Name the business and the year.
- Why you come back: clients, staff, contracts or a shop that needs you. One true sentence is enough.
- Who runs things while you're away, if anyone does.
- Your income: say that business and personal bank statements and tax returns are enclosed.

Questions people ask
Do self-employed people need a leave letter?
No, there is no employer to write one. Instead, prove your business with registration, tax returns and bank statements, and explain it in your cover letter.
Can I write my own NOC as a business owner?
Some applicants add a short letter on their company letterhead, signed as the owner. It can help, but it does not replace the registration, tax and bank documents.
