Germany Schengen visa cover letter: sample and tips
Germany is known for long waits for appointments in some countries, so plan early. Applications go through the German mission or the visa centre it uses, and more of the process is moving online.

Where and how to apply
- Check the German mission's website for your country. It says whether you apply online through the official consular portal, at a visa centre (often VFS Global), or both.
- Book early. You can apply up to 6 months before your trip, and appointments can be scarce in busy seasons.
- Main destination rule. Apply to Germany if you spend the most nights there.
What your letter should say
The consulate checks four things: why you travel, where you stay, how you pay, and why you will return. A one-page letter covers each of them in a sentence or two, then lists the documents you enclose. The full cover letter guide explains each part.

Good to know for Germany
- German missions value clear, consistent paperwork. A short cover letter that lists every enclosed document makes the file easy to check.
- If the trip is for business, add an invitation from the German company and a letter from your employer.
- Travel medical insurance must cover at least 30,000 euros for every day of your stay.
If you stay with family or friends
If your host in Germany will also pay for your stay, the official document is a Verpflichtungserklärung (formal obligation letter) from their local foreigners' office. If they only host you, an invitation letter with a copy of their ID or residence permit is usually enough. You can prepare the personal letter with the invitation letter guide.
