Italy Schengen visa cover letter: sample and tips
For Italy, the official site Il Visto per l'Italia tells you which visa you need and what to bring. Most applicants then hand in their documents at the visa centre Italy uses in their country.
Where and how to apply
- Check the requirements first on the official Il Visto per l'Italia website. Answer its questions and it lists the documents for your nationality and trip.
- Book the visa centre that Italy uses where you live (often VFS Global). The Italian embassy's website names it.
- Main destination rule. Apply to Italy if you spend the most nights there.
What your letter should say
The consulate checks four things: why you travel, where you stay, how you pay, and why you will return. A one-page letter covers each of them in a sentence or two, then lists the documents you enclose. The full cover letter guide explains each part.

Good to know for Italy
- Italian consulates look closely at proof of money for the whole stay. If someone else pays, add a sponsorship letter and their bank statements.
- If you visit several Italian cities, list them in order with dates. It should match your hotel bookings night by night.
- Travel medical insurance must cover at least 30,000 euros for every day of your stay.
If you stay with family or friends
If you stay with family or friends in Italy, your host writes an invitation letter (often called dichiarazione di ospitalità or invitation and guarantee declaration) and adds a copy of their ID or residence permit. Ask the consulate which form it expects. You can prepare the personal letter with the invitation letter guide.
