Greece Schengen visa cover letter: sample and tips
Greece is a favourite for summer trips, so appointments fill up from spring. Applications usually go through the visa centre the Greek consulate uses in your country.
Where and how to apply
- Check the Greek embassy or consulate website for your country. It names the visa centre and gives the checklist.
- Book early for summer. You can apply up to 6 months before your trip.
- Main destination rule. Apply to Greece if you spend the most nights there, including the islands.
What your letter should say
The consulate checks four things: why you travel, where you stay, how you pay, and why you will return. A one-page letter covers each of them in a sentence or two, then lists the documents you enclose. The full cover letter guide explains each part.

A sample for a tourist trip. Replace every detail with your own, and keep the dates identical to your bookings.
Good to know for Greece
- Island hopping is fine, but list every island with dates and make sure ferries and hotels match. Gaps between bookings are a common question from officers.
- If you fly into Athens and leave from an island, say so in the letter, so the flight reservation makes sense.
- Travel medical insurance must cover at least 30,000 euros for every day of your stay.
If you stay with family or friends
If you stay with family or friends in Greece, your host writes an invitation letter, usually with a copy of their ID or residence permit and proof of address. Ask the consulate if it needs an official certification of the host's signature. You can prepare the personal letter with the invitation letter guide.
Questions people ask
Do I need a cover letter for a Greece Schengen visa?
Many Greek visa centres ask for a letter explaining the trip. With island trips it is especially useful, because it explains the route.
Can I enter Greece and also visit Italy?
Yes, but apply to the country where you spend the most nights. If it's equal, apply to the first country you enter.
