Switzerland Schengen visa cover letter: sample and tips
Switzerland is not in the EU, but it is in the Schengen area, so a Schengen visa covers it. Applications usually go through the visa centre the Swiss mission uses in your country.

Where and how to apply
- Check the Swiss embassy's website for your country. It names the visa centre (often VFS Global) and the checklist.
- Main destination rule. Apply to Switzerland if you spend the most nights there. A day trip to Switzerland from Italy or France does not make it your main destination.
- Plan the budget. Switzerland is expensive, and officers check that your money covers the stay.
What your letter should say
The consulate checks four things: why you travel, where you stay, how you pay, and why you will return. A one-page letter covers each of them in a sentence or two, then lists the documents you enclose. The full cover letter guide explains each part.

Good to know for Switzerland
- Bank statements should clearly cover Swiss prices for hotels, transport and food. A sponsor letter helps if someone else pays.
- Mountain trips are fine to mention, like Interlaken or Zermatt, but list where you sleep each night.
- Travel medical insurance must cover at least 30,000 euros for every day of your stay.
If you stay with family or friends
If your host in Switzerland will pay for your stay, they may need to sign an official declaration of guarantee with their cantonal migration office. If they only host you, an invitation letter with a copy of their ID or residence permit is usually enough. You can prepare the personal letter with the invitation letter guide.
Questions people ask
Is a Schengen visa valid for Switzerland?
Yes. Switzerland is part of the Schengen area, so a Schengen visa from any member covers it, and a Swiss Schengen visa covers the other members.
Do I need a cover letter for a Switzerland Schengen visa?
Many Swiss missions ask for a letter explaining the purpose of the trip. Check the checklist for your country.
