Austria Schengen visa cover letter: sample and tips
Austria is often combined with Germany, Czechia or Hungary on one trip. Apply to Austria only if you spend the most nights there.

Where and how to apply
- Check the Austrian embassy's website for your country. It names the visa centre (often VFS Global) and gives the checklist.
- Main destination rule. Vienna and Salzburg with a day in Bratislava or Munich is still an Austrian application, as long as most nights are in Austria.
- Apply in time: at least 15 days before the trip, and no earlier than 6 months before it.
What your letter should say
The consulate checks four things: why you travel, where you stay, how you pay, and why you will return. A one-page letter covers each of them in a sentence or two, then lists the documents you enclose. The full cover letter guide explains each part.

Good to know for Austria
- Ski and lake trips are fine to mention, but list where you sleep each night, especially if you move between resorts.
- If you travel by train between countries, a train route in the itinerary is as good as flights. Keep the dates consistent.
- Travel medical insurance must cover at least 30,000 euros for every day of your stay.
If you stay with family or friends
If your host in Austria will also cover your costs, the official document is an electronic declaration of liability (elektronische Verpflichtungserklärung, often called EVE), which the host makes with the Austrian authorities. If they only host you, an invitation letter with a copy of their ID or residence permit is usually enough. You can prepare the personal letter with the invitation letter guide.
Questions people ask
Do I need a cover letter for an Austria Schengen visa?
Many Austrian visa centres list a letter explaining the purpose of the trip. Check the checklist for your country.
Can I visit Prague on an Austrian visa?
Yes. The visa covers the Schengen area, but Austria should be where you spend the most nights.
