Schengen visa cover letter if you don't work
Many applicants are between jobs, or care for a home and family. That is not a reason for refusal, but the letter must show clearly who pays and why you will come back.
What to say in your letter
- Your situation, plainly: "I am a homemaker" or "I am currently between jobs".
- Who pays: usually a spouse or parent. Say so, and add their sponsorship letter and bank statements.
- Why you will return: your spouse, children, home, a job offer or studies starting after the trip.
- Travel with family: if you travel with your spouse, refer to their application and employer letter.

I am a homemaker. My husband will pay for the whole trip, and his sponsorship letter, bank statements and employer's letter are enclosed. Our marriage certificate is also enclosed.
We will stay at Hotel Navona in Rome, Hotel Duomo in Florence and Hotel Rialto in Venice.
Our two children will stay with my parents in Karachi during the trip, and they start school again on 3 August 2027. We will return home on 21 July 2027.
I enclose: visa application form, passport, photos, travel medical insurance, flight reservation, hotel bookings, my husband's sponsorship letter, bank statements and employer's letter, and our marriage certificate.
Yours faithfully,

Documents that usually help
- A sponsorship letter from the person who pays, with their bank statements and proof of income
- Marriage or birth certificate, to show the relationship to the sponsor
- Proof of ties: home ownership, children's school, a job offer letter
- Your own bank statements, if you have savings
Questions people ask
Can I get a Schengen visa if I don't work?
Yes. You need to show who pays for the trip and why you will return home. A sponsor's letter and documents usually cover the money.
Should I say I'm unemployed in the letter?
Yes, plainly. Leaving it out or making it vague raises more questions than a clear sentence does.
