Where and how to apply

Check the Hungarian consular website for your country. It names the visa centre and gives the checklist.
Main destination rule. Budapest and Lake Balaton with a day trip to Vienna is still Hungary if most nights are there.
Apply in time: at least 15 days before, and no earlier than 6 months before the trip.

What your letter should say

The consulate checks four things: why you travel, where you stay, how you pay, and why you will return. A one-page letter covers each of them in a sentence or two, then lists the documents you enclose. The full cover letter guide explains each part.

Good to know for Hungary

Thermal bath visits and Danube cruises are fine to mention as part of the plan. Officers mainly want the dates, places and nights to match.
If you combine Budapest with Vienna and Prague, apply to the country with the most nights, not the first city.
Travel medical insurance must cover at least 30,000 euros for every day of your stay.

If you stay with family or friends in Hungary, your host usually provides an invitation letter, and for some cases an official letter of invitation certified by the Hungarian immigration authority.
