Schengen visa cover letter to visit a partner
Visiting a boyfriend or girlfriend is a common reason to apply, and a common one to be asked about. The letter should explain the relationship plainly and show why you will return.
What to say in your letter
- Who you visit: your partner's name, where they live, and their status there.
- How you know each other: how and when you met, and how long you have been together. Keep it short and factual.
- Where you stay: at your partner's home, with their invitation letter enclosed.
- Who pays: you, your partner, or both. Say which, and add the matching bank statements.
- Why you return: your job or studies, family, and the date you come back.

Subject: Application for a short-stay Schengen visa (visiting a partner)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am applying for a short-stay Schengen visa to visit my partner, Daan de Vries, a Dutch citizen, in Utrecht from 10 March 2027 to 31 March 2027 (22 days).
We met in Cebu in 2025, when Daan was working on a project there, and have been together since. He visited me again in December 2025. I will stay at his home, and his invitation letter and a copy of his passport are enclosed.
I will pay for my flights, and Daan will cover my accommodation and daily costs. Both of our bank statements are enclosed.
I work as a nurse at Cebu Doctors' Hospital, and my leave has been approved. My parents live with me in Cebu, and I will return to work on 2 April 2027.
I enclose: visa application form, passport, photos, travel medical insurance, flight reservation, Daan's invitation letter and passport copy, the official proof of sponsorship and private accommodation form, my employer's leave letter and bank statements.
Yours faithfully,
Ana Lim

Documents that usually help
- Your partner's invitation letter and a copy of their ID or residence permit
- Proof of the relationship, such as photos together or earlier trips
- The host's official form if the country has one, for example France's attestation d'accueil
- Your own proof of job or studies and return date
Questions people ask
How do I prove the relationship?
A short, factual explanation in the letter, and some evidence such as photos together, messages or earlier visits. Check what your consulate accepts.
Will visiting a partner lead to a refusal?
Not by itself. Officers look at whether you will return, so a clear job, family and return date matter most.
Requirements differ between consulates and change over time. Always check the official checklist of the consulate you apply to. This page is general information, not legal or immigration advice.
